Le projet RSG-France consiste en la création d’un groupe local de l’ISCB Student Council.

Notre mission : établir une communauté dynamique de jeunes bioinformaticiens, pleine de vitalité et bien connectée pour la bioinformatique en France.

Qu’est-ce que l’ISCB Student Council ?

L’ISCB (International Society for Computational Biology) est une société savante qui vise à faire progresser la compréhension scientifique des systèmes vivants grâce aux méthodes computationnelles. L’ISCB organise chaque année la conférence ISMB, un des rendez-vous majeurs de la communauté bioinformatique internationale.

Le Student Council est la section de l’ISCB dédiée aux plus jeunes. Son objectif est de développer la prochaine génération de bioinformaticiens. Pour cela, des opportunités sont offertes aux jeunes membres de l’ISCB mais aussi à tous les jeunes intéressés par le domaine de la bioinformatique. Des évènements sont en particulier organisés afin de favoriser les contacts et les discussions entre les jeunes, mais aussi entre les jeunes bioinformaticiens et ceux qui sont plus expérimentés.

Qu’est-ce qu’un Regional Student Group (RSG) ?

Depuis 2006, le Student Council a mis en place des groupes régionaux, pour mieux répondre aux spécificités des différentes communautés (RSG-Inde, RSG-Afrique, RSG-Danemark, RSG-Pays-Bas, RSG-Canada, RSG-Maroc, RSG-Singapour). Leur but est notamment de mettre en place des évènements bénéfiques au développement professionnel des jeunes bioinformaticiens sur le plan local. De plus, des opportunités sont créées pour permettre aux jeunes d’entrer en contact avec les organisations et industries locales.

Qu’est-ce qu’ils ont fait aux Pays-Bas ?

Le RSG-Netherlands a été créé en 2008. Ce RSG est associé au centre de bioinformatique NBIC (Netherlands Bioinformatics Center). NBIC est une fondation qui coordonne la recherche, l’éducation et les activités de support afin de stimuler le développement de la bioinformatique aux Pays-Bas. Ce RSG a été officiellement mis en route lors du congrès BioRange du NBIC en mars 2008 avec la participation de 100 personnes dont 35 doctorants. Le RSG-Netherlands compte déjà plus de 50 membres, dont 4 personnes dans le bureau. Cette année, ils ont organisé un atelier regroupant 60 personnes sur la communication des travaux de recherche ainsi qu’un déjeuner-discussion regroupant 35 personnes. Les membres du bureau participent également au groupe chargé de l’éducation au sein de NBIC.

What is the ISCB Student Council?

The ISCB (International Society for Computational Biology) is a scholarly society dedicated to advancing the scientific understanding of living systems through computation. The ISCB hosts annual meetings, including the ISMB, the world’s longest running and largest bioinformatics conference (held jointly with the ECCB every other year in Europe).

The ISCB Student Council is the student organization of the International Society for Computational Biology. It is dedicated to promote the development of the next generation of computational biologists by facilitating opportunities of development for students and young researchers in the field of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. The ISCB Student Council provides scientific events, networking opportunities, soft-skills training, educational resources and career advice, while attempting to influence policy processes affecting science and education.

What is a Regional Student Group (RSG)?

In 2006, the Student Council conceptualized ‘Regional Student Groups (RSGs)’ with the aim to promote interaction among students pursuing research in the field of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Over the past few years, SC has successfully established 9 RSGs globally and the number is on a steady rise. Presently, the RSGs comprise of more than 1500 members across the world. RSGs conduct regional events and meetings to promote the professional development of students. RSGs also aim to serve as a bridge between the local industry and academia by providing career opportunities for the students.

Why was RSG-France created?

Nationally:

• To put in place a national structure in bioinformatics dedicated to young bioinformaticians (e.g. inform about career opportunities in France),
• To coordinate and unite colleagues, young or experimented, which can lead to fruitful discussions or collaborative projects, PhDs, post-docs,…,
• To promote the involvement of young researchers in the bioinformatics community,
• To function with the SFBI (French Society for Bioinformatics), setting up common goals and specific interests for young researchers.

Internationally:

• To take part in a recognized international organization,
• To take advantage from a structure already set up and highly dynamic,
• Favour the involvement of young French researchers on an international level through the Student Council and allow them to see how the organizations function abroad,
• To increase the visibility of France in the field of bioinformatics
